Jonah 3:4 – "Jonah entered into the city a day's journey, and he cried out and said: 'Yet forty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown'." Matthew and Luke 4:1-2 – "And Yeshua was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil for forty days and nights." The Forty Days! For forty days the rain came down upon the earth, and flooded the entire planet (Genesis 7:4-17). After the rains stopped, it was forty days before Noah exited the Ark (Genesis 8:6).   Moshe was on the mountain twice for forty days, (Exodus 24:18 & 34:28). Yeshua was in the Wilderness fasting and praying for forty days (Matthew 4:1, Luke 4:1). The Days of Teshuva are forty days long. The forty days of Teshuvah represent the second forty days that Moses spent on Mount Sinai after the Golden Calf incident(Exodus 34:28). Jonah's Forty Days! Jonah was in Nineveh for forty days calling out for repentance, warning the city of its impending destruction! Those forty days were during the same time frame as Moses second trek up the mountain seeking atonement for the nation of Israel after their building of the Golden Calf, Yeshua's trek in the wilderness being tested, and the Days of Teshuva – the time frame of the fall feasts – the days of Yom Teruah, Yom Kippurim, and Sukkoth!!!! Elul 1 to Tishri 10! Moses came down from the mountain on the day of Yom Kippurim. Yeshua exited the wilderness on the day of Yom Kippurim. Likewise, Jonah left Nineveh on the day of Yom Kippurim! The Sleeper Jonah 1: 5-6 – "But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the ship, laid down and had fallen fast asleep. So the captain came and said to him, 'What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise and call out to your god! . . . . Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us'." Matthew 8:24 – "And a great storm developed on the sea so that the waves began to swamp the boat. But Yeshua was fast asleep." Mark 4:37-38 – "And there arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was filling up. But Yeshua was in the stern of the boat fast asleep on a cushion." Notice the parallels: A great storm arises, and both Yeshua and Jonah are fast asleep. Both crews attribute this storm to an evil influence (the sea was considered to be a synonym for the abyss [ἄβυσσος G12]; a place of evil and abode of demons – see Luke 8:31). Jonah is told to cry out to his god. Yeshua simply speaks. The storms dissipate and the water becomes calm. Ephesians 5:14 – "Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Messiah will shine on you." Paul is speaking to the people of the church, telling them to wake up – to confront the evil that is impacting them and stop doing their "own thing". Jonah is asleep, doing his own thing, running away from Yahweh. He represents the sleeping church doing their own will!! He represents those who try to force Yahweh to do it their way, in their time, according to their own theology. The Sukkah Jonah 4:5 – "So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city." Jonah heads out of the city on the eastern side and builds a booth – a sukkah [סֻכָּה H5521]. Why to the east?   Because scripture teaches that Mashiach will come from the East when he returns to bring judgment. Yom Kippur has passed, the books are closed, and judgment is about to be meted out! Jonah has built a sukkah and is waiting to see Yahweh arrive from the East and destroy Nineveh. The Gourd Jonah 4:6 – "And Yahweh prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his evil." Jonah already had shade from the sukkah. Yahweh brings a gourd to deliver Jonah from his evil – not from his discomfort, grief, or misery as some translations put it! The word being translated is the Hebrew word: ra` [רַע H7451]; which means: evil – not discomfort, grief, or misery! Jonah 4:8-9 – "Death is better to me than life . . . . I have good reason to be angry, even to death." Unlike Abraham desiring Sodom be spared and unlike Moses desiring the Hebrews at Mount Sinai to be spared, Jonah does not want Yahweh to pardon Nineveh's evil, but to bring his wrath upon them. Yahweh not only shows Nineveh mercy because of their repentance, he also shows mercy to Jonah by delivering Jonah from his own evil. Jonah is having none of it, however. He never repents or even apologizes. Just the opposite, he begs for death. Conclusions Jonah is in Nineveh during the same forty day time frame as the forty days Moses was seeking forgiveness for the golden calf, the very same forty day time frame of Yeshua's forty days in the wilderness. And it is the same forty day time frame as the forty Days of Teshuva – the time frame of the fall feasts – the days of Yom Teruah, Yom Kippurim, and Sukkoth!!!! Elul 1 to Tishri 10! Final Thought Prophecy continues to unfold as foretold by the Hebrew Prophets. The fall feasts will some year be fulfilled. The day is coming when Yahweh will show his strength on the mountains of Israel. What is prophesied will come to pass, what is foretold will be made known. Time is short – Yeshua Ha'Mashiach is coming soon – get busy reaching the lost.
