Marshall, The photo above is telling. Aisha, a 28-year-old wife and mother of three in the Nigerian village of Kano painted the self-portrait during a recent Open Doors trauma counseling session. Her story is extremely difficult but equally as important. Two years ago, Hausa-Fulani Islamic militants attacked Aisha's community and forced their way into her home. Seeing a Bible on the table, they immediately assumed Aisha's husband was a pastor. Quickly, they grabbed him and shoved him outside. Then they turned their attention to Aisha. They demanded sex from her. When she refused, they beat her. That night, Aisha was raped by two men. What happened to Aisha is happening to thousands of women in 73 countries. Research for the 2019 World Watch List surfaces some disturbing realities. Like Aisha, increasing numbers of women and girls are facing double vulnerability—because they are Christians and because they are female. You can learn more here in our report. | |
