Because California Democrats are fast-tracking AB 2624 — already being called the “Stop Nick Shirley Act.”

This bill would make it a crime for citizen journalists like Nick to film or post videos of publicly funded facilities — exactly the kind of on-the-ground investigative work Nick has been doing in California and Minnesota.

If this bill passes, Nick’s ability to expose taxpayer fraud in government programs could be severely crippled — or even criminalized — with fines up to $10,000 and forced content removal.

Think about what that means:

Nick’s explosive Minnesota daycare fraud investigation that forced Congress to take notice?
His on-the-ground reporting in California exposing waste and abuse in government programs?
Future investigations into hospice fraud, voter roll issues, or any other taxpayer-funded facility?

All of it could be criminalized under this new law. The message from Sacramento Democrats is crystal clear: “Stop exposing the fraud… or we’ll make sure you can’t.”

And the ultimate irony? The same lawmakers who authored and voted to advance this bill watched Nick Shirley walk right up to them in their own Capitol building, microphone in hand, and ask them point-blank why they’re trying to criminalize investigative journalism.

They had no good answer.
