But the thing about the arrival of censorship (that is, the forced elimination of the expressed ideas of a portion of humanity) is that, initially, it really doesn't sting that much. It may be inconvenient...it may seem unfair and moderately intrusive; but censorship is like the first stages of cancer. Most people don't even realize they have it. The cancer cells quietly feed on other healthy cells. It metastasizes and slowly takes over the entire body. Soon the cancer overwhelms and destroys the body. That's exactly what censorship does. When you tear out a man's tongue, you're not proving him a liar, you're simply demonstrating that you fear what he might say. Censorship is to society what cancer is to the body. (continued...) | |
