Some answers from 'Do you think the modeling industry can be harmful to young women and men?'
Valerie: 'The fact that the modeling industry focuses so completely on looks and "desirability" makes it troublesome. There is so much more to the human being than appearances. We are physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. To make looks and "desirability" the preeminent goal leads to a host of dangers: anorexia, drug use, insecurity, shallowness, and hyper-sexuality. The modeling biz has also been tied to prostitution and human trafficking, just do some research on Rachel Chandler and her "modeling" agency. Jeffrey Epstein also had ties to a modeling agency via his pal Jean-Luc Brunel. The fact that kids are "dying to be cool" (literally, in some cases) is a sad reflection on our times. In decades past, young people wanted to do meaningful work and develop their talents, skills, intellect or craft. They had concern for family, community, and principles. Today, endless "selfies," how many "likes" and followers you have on social media, and how "desirable" you appear is all important social cache to narcissistic youth. This exemplifies the dumbing down, demoralization and weakening of America. Pop culture, the media, social media, show biz, advertising are a few of the culprits pushing this demeaning agenda. But who is behind it? There most definitely was/is a hidden hand.'
