Iran: A Threat From Israel Is The Same As From America

Iran:  A Threat From Israel Is A Threat From America

On Wednesday, an Iranian military commander said that "Iran makes no distinction between U.S. and Israeli interests and will retaliate against both countries if attacked."  This follows an Israeli news report that the Obama Administration was negotiating with Tehran to keep America out of a future Israel-Iran war.

"The Zionist regime separated from America has no meaning, and we must not recognize Israel as separate from America," said Ali Fadavi, a naval commander in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as quoted by the Fars news agency.  "On this basis, today only the Americans have taken a threatening stance towards the Islamic Republic.  If the Americans commit the smallest folly they will not leave the region safely."

Iran recently conducted military exercises in the region, a war games exercise that was supposed to include Israel, aiming to show it can defend itself against any strike against its nuclear sites.  Iran has also unveiled an upgraded missile attack system that has capabilities of reaching both the nation of Israel and US interests in the region.

With the approach of US elections in November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is calling for a tougher US stance on Iran, implicitly knocking President Obama's emphasis on diplomatic and sanctions pressure to halt Iranian nuclear work.

Iran within the past couple of days stated that the sanctions imposed upon it regarding its nuclear program are starting to hurt, this indicating that he is ready for another round of "negotiations and inspections."  How Ahmedinejad's comments should be read are as follows:  "We need more time to make a nuclear weapon, world community.  We hate Israel the same as you, but we need more time to process the uranium-238 at Qom into plutonium.  Then we will destroy the Zionist regime from off the face of the earth.  Let's get some talks started to make it look like we, and you, actually care about Israel and buy us some more time."

By Israeli law, any decision to go to war requires the approval of the security cabinet.  According to one government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said no such decisions were on the table at Tuesday's meeting.
