Omega-3's and prenatal health

This thought came to my wife today 03/11/2013:  "If all a baby is is nothing more than a cluster of cells the first 3 months of pregnancy, why then do prenatal doctors stress the importance of an expectant mother consuming enough Omega-3 fatty acids for her unborn child during this same time frame?  Why care at all, let alone so much that the doctors stress the 1st trimester as being the most crucial time of pregnancy in transferring Omega-3 nutrients to the unborn child?"

Indeed, the Omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) vitally important in the development of the child.  The terms zygote, embryo, and fetus refer only to the classification of the child at different stages of development, not that they are different creatures.  Additionally, the term blastocyst does not describe a non-human creature, merely another name for the developing child. (1)

EPA supports heart, immune system, and inflammatory response. (2)  Some of the benefits of EPA on the heart include retardation of existing heart disease, lower triglycerides, lower blood pressure, reduction of arterial plaque, and more.

EPA also has anti-inflammatory properties as well.  Several small studies have produced evidence that fish oil the symptoms and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.  It does not, aparently, stop the disease from getting worse, but there is a definite retardation effect present.

Omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA, may also have positive effects on lung and kidney diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, anorexia nervosa, burns, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and early stages of colorectal cancer.  Children born with these conditions, or born to parents with these conditions, would surely benefit from fish oil Omega-3's; and these are just some of the benefits.

For more information on the benefits of Omega-3' fatty acids, please go to http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/eicosapentaenoic-acid-000301.htm.  Given all of the health benefits associated with Omega-3's, especially EPA, one must ask again, "If all a baby is is nothing more than a cluster of cells the first 3 months of pregnancy, why then do prenatal doctors stress the importance of an expectant mother consuming enough Omega-3 fatty acids for her unborn child during this same time frame?  Why care at all, let alone so much that the doctors stress the 1st trimester as being the most crucial time of pregnancy in transferring Omega-3 nutrients to the unborn child?"
